How to cancel IRCTC ticket? ,Train cancelled refund Step by step guide


Canceling a ticket is as easy as booking tickets online,but it can be time consuming if a person is unaware of the cancellation rules for confirmed, waitlisted and RAC tickets for sleeper and AC classes.

For travelers to book their railway tickets in just a few minutes while sitting at their place. People can now book their railway tickets through their mobile phones and and debit card l, credit card or upi  by using IRCTC website or application software (app). The cancellation of tickets is as simple as booking an online ticket, but it can be time consuming if a person is unaware of the cancellation rules for confirmed, waitlisted and RAC tickets for sleeper and AC classes.

How to cancel railway e-ticket:

Online tickets or e-tickets booked through IRCTC portal can be cancelled online till the time of chart preparation. Follow the given steps to cancel your e-ticket:

Step 1: Visit the official website of Indian Railways, irctc.co.in

Step 2: Go to 'Booked Tickets' link

Step 3: Select the ticket to be cancelled by selecting the passengers to be cancelled.

Step 4: The cancellation will be confirmed online and the refund would be credited back to the account used for booking, after deduction of applicable cancellation charges.

Partial cancellation of ticket:

If there is any partial cancellation of ticket, make sure that a fresh e-reservation slip (electronic reservation slip) is printed separately as done for the original ticket

Steps for booking railway reserved ticket on IRCTC website/app from mobile phone:

Step 1: Login to URL irctc.co.in/mobile with your existing IRCTC user id and password or download the app of IRCTC

Step 2: Click on 'Plan my journey' under the option for 'Train Ticketing'

Step 3: Select the journey date, train and continue the booking

Step 4: Use existing passenger list or add passengers.

Step 5: Confirm booking details and make the payment through credit/debit card/UPI/Paytm

After booking, the passenger will receive a reservation message with full details of the ticket including PNR, train number, date of journey, class etc. Showing the reservation message of the confirmed ticket on their mobile during travel will be sufficient.

If Train Cancelled, How to get Refund?

If Train Cancelled e-Ticket Refund will be automatically credited in Bank Account in 3 to 7 days, If PRS Counter Ticket 'Refund need to be collected from the PRS counter'.

Can I claim full refund if my train is cancelled?

If your train is cancelled due to accidents, breaches or floods and any other reason, you will be refunded the full fare paid by you. To claim this refund, you should surrender your ticket within three days of the scheduled de-parture of the train.

General Ticket Cancellation & Refund Rules

What is General Ticket Cancellation & Refund Rules?

The amount deducted is based on the time of cancellation and the status of your ticket. Detailed are given below:

Forcancellation of confirmed ticketsmore than 48 hours advance of the scheduled departure of the train.

Flat cancellation charges per passenger:-

  • AC first/Executive class - Rs.240/-
  • AC-2tier/1st class - Rs.200/-
  • AC-3tier/AC chair car, AC-3Economy - Rs.180/-
  • Sleeper - Rs.120/-
  • Second class - Rs.60/-

For cancellation of confirmed tickets less than 48 hours and upto 12 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, the cancellation charges will be 25% of the total fare paid by you subject fo minimum flat cancellation charge.

For cancellation of confirmed tickets less than 12 hours before the scheduled departure of the train and upto 4 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, the cancellation charges will be 50% of the fare paid by you, subject to minimum flat cancellation charges for each class.

For cancellation of RAC/Waitlisted tickets if ticket is presented for cancellation upto 30 min before the scheduled departure of the train irrespective of distance, Full refund of fare will be given, after deducting the clerkage charge per passenger

If you are having a ticket with several legs of journey:

  • If the first leg of the journey is confirmed the whole ticket will be treated as a confirmed ticket for purpose of applying cancellation/refund rules.
  • On the other hand if the first leg of the journey is in the waiting list, even if the all the other legs of onward journey are confirmed, the whole ticket will still be treated only as waitlisted ticket for purpose of granting refund.
