BREAKING: Buckeyes land commitment from 4-star Florida safety

Titusville (Fla.) Cocoa 2023 safety Cedrick Hawkins has announced a commitment to Ohio State. Hawkins announced his decision tonight on Instagram.  He also posted his decision on Twitter as well.

The 5-foot-11 and 165-pound Hawkins picked the Buckeyes over scholarship offers from Florida State, Florida, Miami, Cincinnati, Penn State, Arizona State, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Kentucky, Washington State,  and others.  Hawkins has been recruited by one of the Ohio State staff's top recruiters, Tony Alford who recruits the area in Florida that Hawkins is from.

Hawkins has been to Ohio State having camped with the Buckeyes during the summer.

“I would say the biggest reason was I love the coaching staff and the area,” Hawkins said as to why he picked the Buckeyes.  “I was up there for camp and had fun and loved it up there.  I think Ohio State fits me perfectly."

In addition to Alford, Hawkins has been recruited by Ryan Day.

“I talk to both coach Alford and coach Day,” Hawkins said.  “I haven’t met him yet, but they talked about coach (Jim) Knowles.  They recruited me as a safety.  Single high safety, two safeties, nickel safety, whichever way gets me on the field the fastest.

“I want to get back up there as soon as I can.  I just have to talk to my mom about it.”

Hawkins is a 4-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite.  He is the country's No. 226 overall class of 2023 prospect.  He is the country's No. 20 safety and the No. 40 overall class of 2023 prospects in the state of Florida.

Hawkins told Bucknuts Florida State was probably his second choice.

“Cedrick burst on the scene as a freshman,” 247Sports Florida recruiting insider and analyst Andrew Ivins said.  “He had nine or ten interceptions that year.  He is known for making plays.  He just needs to put on some weight.

“He is definitely more of a safety than a corner..  He is a safety or maybe a nickel corner with his ball skills.  He just makes plays.  Ohio State has had a lot of success recruiting down here and it continues.”

The Buckeyes also have a good start to their 2023 recruiting class with commitments from 4-star offensive lineman Joshua Padilla and 4-star tight end Ty Lockwood from Tennessee. And now they have added Hawkins. The Ohio State 2023 recruiting class is currently ranked as the country’s No. 13 recruiting class in the 247Sports Composite team recruiting rankings.
